Cultivating AI Literacy in the Classroom

Ever since Chat-GPT was released in 2022, AI has dominated not only the cultural conversation, but the educational one as well. Recent studies show that a majority of students in the US and UK are using AI in some form. How can instructors empower students to critically evaluate AI-generated content, foster responsible engagement with emerging tools, and address key concerns around academic integrity and learning outcomes? Read on to discover our top tips to encourage AI literacy in the classroom.

#1. Discuss AI With Your Students

Most students do not want to cheat — they want to come to class prepared to learn and do their best and want to use AI simply because it is a helpful tool that is available to them. The parameters and guardrails that individual institutions set on AI usage will vary widely, so be sure to talk with your students about your expectations and what responsible usage means for your course. AI is constantly evolving and having an open conversation with students about the ethics of its usage can garner more trust and enthusiasm in the classroom as you all approach the ever-changing AI climate together.

#2. Use AI to Encourage More Critical Thinking

Remind your students that they have so much more to offer than just AI prompts, and future employers will want a holistic, intelligent person — not just someone who can input queries into chatbots. AI is a very helpful tool but is not 100% reliable, and students should be able to use critical thinking and reasoning skills to determine what is useful, accurate information and what is not. Consider instructing students to use AI for the purpose of comparing the results to more traditional search methods, or to foster class discussion on the relevancy and value of its responses. AI is susceptible to mistakes just as human beings are, and your students should be encouraged to trust their own minds and insights alongside their AI use.

#3. Look Out for AI Resources

As the technology develops, take advantage of outside resources to learn the latest news in the AI landscape. Keeping your students informed and able to handle new challenges and ethical dilemmas is at the core of maintaining AI literacy. Consider up-to-date podcasts (like the AI x Higher Ed podcast), videos, online courses, articles, or blogs to stay abreast of any changes, academic studies, and news in the vast, ever-evolving field of AI.
