Overview of All Activity Settings

Activities in Oxford Insight comprise all of the assessments and discussion boards in your course—all of which can be assigned and graded if you choose. Assessments and discussions in Oxford Insight can be configured in a variety of ways, allowing you to customize how they are delivered to your students and how they are scored. Note: To see a list of all the OUP-provided assessments and discussions in your course, along with the default settings for each, see “Resources for [your title]” in the “Instructor Overview” chapter within the Oxford Insight courseware portal.

Edit Activity Settings

There are two ways to access and edit settings for activities within Oxford Insight.

The first way is to select the Activity Settings page from the main menu on the left-hand side of the Oxford Insight navigation under Instructor Tools.

For more on how to use the Activity Settings page, please see “Setting Up Assessments, Batch Updating Settings, & Setting Presets.”
You can also find Activity Settings within the individual Component Settings page:
    1. Navigate to an assessment or discussion.
    2. Switch to Authoring Mode.
    3. Move your cursor over the assessment or discussion and click “Edit.”
    4. Click the Edit Component tab at the top.
The sections below contain a detailed description of all the settings available in both areas.

Batch Settings

Dates and Times

Oxford Insight Batch Settings: Date and Time Settings

Open Date and Time refers to the date and time that students will first be able to attempt the assessment. Students will see the assessment listed in the course but will not be able to start it or see its contents.
The Due Date and Time is the date and time by which the assessment must be submitted in order to receive full credit.
Set the Close Date and Time to decide when students will no longer be able to submit new attempts for the assessment.
The “Student does not see this page until the open date” option completely hides the chapter or page until the date and time specified.

Assessment Settings

Basic

Select between the Graded and Not Graded options in “Show in Gradebook as” to decide whether or not the grade of the assessment will count toward the final grade and will be synced to your LMS gradebook if you have integrated Oxford Insight with your LMS.
Lock the setting to hide it from student view.

Attempts

Determine the maximum number of times a student can submit an attempt for this assessment in Max Submissions Allowed with 0 representing unlimited submissions.
In reopening an assessment, a learner sees whether their answers are correct and can update them as needed. Select the number of Reopen Attempts allowed or insert -1 for unlimited reopens.
Remember that to an instructor, the reopened assessment appears as a single submission.

Grades and Correct Answers

In this section, you can determine whether or not to Allow Students to Check Answers During the Assessment. If allowed, decide whether the student is told that their answers are correct or incorrect either Immediately, After Due Date, or Never and whether the student is shown the correct answer Immediately, After Due Date, or Never.
If you’d like to Allow Students to Review Submitted Assessment, check the box, then determine when you’d like them to be shown the correct/incorrect indicator, and when you’d like the correct answer to be shown.
Decide whether to display a student’s score after they submit their assessment in the auto-scored assessments using the Display Grades toggle.
You can also select whether the grades will be Visible in Student Gradebook, though this option only applies to custom gradebook columns added via the “Custom Roll-up” option in the Insight gradebook.

Question Order and Restrictions

Randomize the order of the questions in the assessment for each student by toggling the Shuffle Item Order option. If set to No, the questions will be displayed in the same order to all students, according to the order specified in the assessment editor.
Prevent students from going back to any previous questions once they have advanced into the assessment with the Lock the Back Button toggle and set a Time Limit for completing the assessment once it is begun.

Discussion Board Settings

In this section, decide whether Learners Must Post Before Seeing Classmates’ Posts in discussion boards and determine the maximum point value for all posts in the discussion with the Total Points setting.

Adaptive Recommendation

The Begin Assessment with Study Center Question option enables a simple confidence question at the start of the assessment. The student’s answer to this question feeds into the algorithm used by the Study Center to determine whether the student is proficient in the relevant content section(s).
If you toggle the Use Assessment to Determine Proficiency (Study Center) option, you enable reporting to the Study Center for the assessment. If left untoggled, the assessment will not be taken into consideration in determining a student’s progress in the Study Center.

Late Work Policy Overrides

Set values that that will override the course-wide Late Work Policy for selected assessments with the Override Late Work Policy for the Selected Item(s) option.
When toggled, you will be able to determine a percentage to deduct per time period, the time period, and a maximum deduction percentage that the total value will not exceed.
When set, submissions will be accepted up to the Close date and time, or at any time if a close date is not set, and scores will automatically be marked down according to the values set in the fields.

Component Settings

Oxford Insight: Component-Level Assessment Settings

General Options

In the General Options section, decide whether the component will be Graded (Y/N) and thus recorded in the Insight gradebook and reported to your LMS gradebook (if integrated).
Set the date and time that students will first be able to attempt the assessment with Open Date and Time. Remember that students will see the assessment listed in the course but will not be able to start it or see its contents before the chosen date/time.
You can determine the date and time by which the assessment must be submitted in order to receive full credit with Due Date and Time and also the date and time that students will no longer be able to submit new attempts for the assessment with Close Date and Time.
Note: All dates must be entered in the following format: MM/DD/YYYY. All times must be entered in 24-hour format, as follows: HH:MM. All dates and times will automatically be displayed to each user in their local time zone.

Assessment-Specific Options

Set the maximum number of times a student can submit an attempt for the assessment with the Max Submits setting. Remember that 0 = unlimited. The number of times a user can reopen a submission is established by the Reopen Attemptssetting. In reopening an assessment, a learner sees whether their answers are correct and can update them as needed. To the instructor, the reopened assessment appears as a single submission.
In this section, you can also determine a Time Limit for the assessment once it is begun and allow students to check the answer to each individual question (if the check answer button is enabled on the question) before submitting the assessment by checking the Allow Check Answer Inline During the Assessment toggle and selecting between Always and After Due Date for when you’d like the answer to be checked. The Do Not Show Correct Answers Inline toggle prevents the student from checking the answer to each individual question before submitting the assessment. If the check answer button is enabled on any questions in the assessment question, this option will hide it. The Show Correct Answers options, on the other hand, will show the correct answer in addition to indicating whether the answer the student entered is correct or incorrect when checking inline. If selected, you can choose whether to Always show or only show After Due Date.
You may also decide to Allow Review of Submissions and Set Correct Answers Display. This setting allows the student to review any attempts they have submitted for the assessment. Choose between Upon Submit, Upon Due Date, Upon Close Date, or Upon Max Attempts for when you’d like the review to occur. If Allow Review is enabled, the Do Not Show Correct Answers in Review setting prevents the correct answers from being displayed in review move, while the Show Correct Answers option will allow the correct answers to be shown in addition to the answers the student selected. You may also choose to show these On Submit, After Due Date, After Close Date, or After Max Attempts.
Selecting Display Scores on Submit shows the student’s score as soon as they submit an attempt. If set to No, the score will be displayed when review is allowed, if it is allowed. Randomize the order of the questions in the assessment for each student by selecting Yes on Shuffle Item Order. If set to No, the questions will be displayed in the same order to all students, according to the order specified in the assessment editor. To prevent the student from going back to any previous questions once they have advanced into the assessment, be sure to Lock the Back Button.
If you decide to Use Confidence Overlay Question, a simple confidence question at the start of the assessment will be enabled, as shown below. The student’s answer to this question feeds into the algorithm used by the Study Center to determine whether the student is proficient in the relevant content section(s).
Oxford Insight: Pre-assessment confidence question

The Auto-Accept Late Work box controls the settings regarding late work. This will set an automatic late work policy for the assessment. Submissions will be accepted up to the Close date and time, if one is set, or at any time if a close date is not set, and scores will automatically be marked down according to the values set in the subsequent fields. Choose to automatically deduct a set percentage per time period, the specification of time period (hour, day, week), as well as a Maximum percentage to deduct.
The Select a Random Subset of Items for Each Assessment Attempt option allows you to select the number of questions specified at random from the total set of questions in the assessment for each attempt. Note that this should only be used when all questions in the assessment have the same point value. Otherwise, different attempts could have different maximum point values.
Lastly, choose whether you would like this assessment reported to the Study Center with the Applies to Study Center option. If set to No, this assessment will not feed the student’s progress in the Study Center.
