Your OI Gradebook and You

Grades aren’t everything…but you do still need to record them. The Oxford Insight gradebook can be a helpful tool for all instructors, regardless of whether you’ve integrated OI into your LMS or not. Read on for the best ways to take advantage of the OI gradebook and have its many features work for you.

Syncing the gradebook

When you’ve integrated Oxford Insight into your institution’s LMS, the OI gradebook will automatically sync with your LMS gradebook. But it’s still a good idea to familiarize yourself with the customization options the platform offers and check your settings to guarantee that everything you want to sync is syncing, and everything you don’t want, isn’t. You can access the LTI Sync Manager at any time during the course by clicking in the Instructor Tools menu. Here you can select which assignments you’d like to sync with your LMS system, or which, if any, you’d like to remove. You can also decide which OI assignments will be graded by looking through the Activity Settings and checking the Graded box on the right. Whatever assignments you’ve checked, this box will appear in your OI gradebook as a column. GIF of the Activity Settings, scrolling through and checking various activities to be graded

Assignment Settings

Adjust grades and manage activity setting overrides by hovering over any entry in the gradebook and selecting the three dots that appear on the right. By selecting Manage Overrides, you can adjust activity parameters for individual students, such as the due date, number of submission attempts, or time limit. You can also add a custom assignment as a new column by clicking Add a Custom Column under the Actions dropdown. Then:
  1. Select which Lesson the assignment will fall under
  2. Add a Title, Point Value, Due Date, and decide whether or not to show the assignment in the Student Gradebook
  3. Click Add.
Newer edition texts will also have the ability to create custom groups of assignments. Clicking the Actions tab and selecting Edit Custom Groups will open the custom groups menu where you can create a new group or edit existing ones. Maybe you’d like to group all the video quizzes together, or have assignments grouped as Chapters 1-3, 4-6, etc. For integrated users, one of your LTI sync options is to sync by custom groups so you can maintain these groupings across systems and they will appear the same way in your LMS gradebook. Cleaning Up the Gradebook

  • Is your gradebook starting to feel overwhelming? Clean it up by unassigning all assignments that are set to graded and reassigning what you’d like to show up. This will clear out the clutter and refocus the gradebook on the assignments that are most important.
  • You also may notice your own name listed as an entry in the Gradebook. If you test any of the assessments and accumulate your own grades, they will show up here. But don’t worry — instructor grades are not factored into reporting in any way.

Other Settings

  • The Gradebook allows instructors to email any of their students directly from OI, and is also where instructors will unenroll students. Both of these actions are accomplished by ticking the checkbox next to any student’s name and selecting the desired option.
  • For Non-Integrated, or Cloud, users, you can easily download the gradebook by clicking the Download CSV option under the Actions menu. This will export all your grades into an Excel file for your convenience.
